Refugees Around the World

The statistics for the number of people around the world displaced by war and conflict vary according to the source of information. Many people are not registered for a variety of reasons: they may not know they can register; the host country may not allow them to be registered; they may choose not to register for fear of detection; or, where people are internally displaced, they are still in their countries of origin and thus registered as citizens (not displaced people).
Refugees International Japan has researched the situation with regard to displacement and we estimate there are over 70 million displaced from their homes, representing about 1% of the world population. Official statistics put the figure at 63 million people but there are a lot of people who are not registered.

This map shows the distribution of people displaced around the world. This map does not clearly show that there are more internally displaced people in the world now than refugees as countries police their borders to avoid refugees creating pressure on already limited resources.
