RIJ travelled over 44,800 kilometres to collect over 100 items from refugees for the collection that was displayed in White Space Gallery Omotesando. Each item has a story with it describing why the item was so meaningful. RIJ raised over ¥120,000 in donations (after costs) from this informative exhibit.
In February 2015, RIJ presented “Somewhat Optimistic”, an exhibition of photos by photographer and RIJ Director Alexander Treves, including some taken while he accompanied an RIJ project visit to the Thai-Burma border.
Running over three days, all donations from the exhibition went to RIJ projects. The exhibition raised an amazing ¥4.3million. To view the photos from the exhibition, click here to view the photos.
Racing the Planet 2013:
“Racing the Planet” is a gruelling off-trail endurance footrace, where individual competitors must cross 250 kilometres of desert in six days using only the equipment and food they can carry.
In 2013, Mark Rawson completed the race in Iceland, raising over ¥530,000 to fund an RIJ-supported project which provided higher education for 100 Burmese refugees. Thank you Mark!
Music Night with Thomas Sawada and Tokyo Economic Animals
This was a really nice evening at What the Dickens on 26 January 2014. Great music, great atmosphere and we raised ¥70,000.
RIJ Golf Tournament - Par for a Cause
There are regular Golf tournaments in support of RIJ. They are held at great courses such as Kazusa Country Club, Bristol GOlf Club and Narita International Airport Club
On Thursday 28th November (Thanksgiving!) around 20 eager quizzers assembled at Meguro Tavern to win the grand prize of wine for each team member, second prize of toiletries and the coveted third prize of Heinz Baked Beans. Organised by David Nevin, we welcomed two teams from Amazon who were doing their part in helping to raise 43,000 yen for RIJ. Thank you David and Amazon!
Carolyn Pieroway is also an intrepid Pub Quiz host and has organised several with a Canadian theme at the Hobgoblin pub in Roppongi.
Rhythm & Hope 2013
The fourth annual Rhythm & Hope was held at What the Dickens, Ebisu on 29 September 2013. The evening featured popular music by Rieko Okita, Ikuko Ota, Judy, Keizo Ito, Chain Reaction and Fuka Jam. Through entrance donation, 120,000 yen was raised. A big thank you to the bands who played and all who attended.
RIJ volunteers organise regular running events around the Imperial Palace circuit. More recently, this has taken the form of a Loop Relay with teams of 3 competing to see who can complete the most laps in 2.5 hours.
Barakura Gala Day
The Barakura English Garden hold their annual Gala Day in June. In 2013 they raised 362,000 yen for RIJ.
Footy Japan charity soccer tournament is held on May every year at YC&AC. In 2013 it raised 410,000 yen in support of RIJ.
Tree of Hope to Light up the Life of a Refugee Child
Throughout December 2012 Refugees International Japan hosted the 23rd Tree of Hope event at Karajan Plaza in Ark Hills, Akasaka. On Tuesday 27 November the Tree of Hope was illuminated at the Opening Ceremony. As they do every year, the St. Mary’s Varsity Ensemble Choir delighted the guests with four songs from various countries. We were honoured to welcome Her Imperial Highness Princess Akishino once again as she joined the children to light up the tree. Princess Kiko has supported the Tree of Hope for the last 21 years.

The 7th Grand Auction was held at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo. The Faces of Disco were flown in from the UK to entertain guests with their intriguing disguises. The amazing prizes included a private wine-tasting at Berry Bros and Rudd, a stay in a renovated Dutch town house in Sri Lanka, an African Safari with a visit to an RIJ-funded project and a private Sony screening for 40 guests. Throughout the evening guests were entertained by magician David John, providing an array of dazzling tricks.

The third annual Rhythm & Hope was held at SuperDeluxe. After an early bird raffle, the evening saw a string of astounding performances by artists such as The Watanabes, Ruby Room Orchestra and Monaco 9000. Casino Dance Studio got everyone up and dancing salsa. The raffle included generous donations from Delta Airlines, Abseiling Me, Kimono Wine Bar, Jam Rock Café and T-Bodymake.
Journey to Hope

Journey to Hope takes people on a refugee’s journey from Despair to Hope. The UNHCR emergency tent demonstrates how refugees live when they first flee and the photo gallery in the APL shipping container explains how RIJ funded projects bring Hope to so many. The event was held in the Red Brick Warehouse in Yokohama, where over 400 people joined us to learn more about the trials that refugees face. Burmese refugees living in Japan gave performances of their traditional dance and Ruby Room Orchestra provided a different form of musical entertainment. Despite a downpour on Saturday, Sunday proved to be a great success as hundreds came to take a journey with us.
Midsummer Madness, a light-hearted evening with theatre and buffet in the splendid surroundings of the British Ambassador’s Residence, on 19 June 2009, raised a net income of 440,000 yen.
A musical reception at the French Ambassador’s Residence on 2 December 2008 to celebrate 150 years of Franco-Japanese relations raised 300,000 yen for Refugees International Japan through the promotion of silverware designed by Gio Ponti in collaboration with Christofle.
Christmas Cracker, an evening of song and verse, at the British Ambassador’s Residence on 10 December 2008 raised 860,000 yen through entry donations and sale of raffle tickets.
